Maybe Dan Rottenburg should stop showing his ass if he's so concerned about body parts on display.

TRIGGER WARNING: RAPE & RAPE CULTURE

Lara Logan, the CBS reporter who was separated from her crew while covering the revolution in Egypt and brutally raped by a mob of men is apparently to blame for her abuse because she once had cleavage. Right here, in black and white, Dan Rottenburg says that women who don't want to be raped should stop going outside and wear turtlenecks.

Sign the petition to have Rottenburg removed as editor. Stay away from the comments: he refers to this as "avant guarde" journalism (I WAS JOKING!!!) and accuses the people who are angry of making mountains out of molehills and stopping conversation.

This is beyond unacceptable. Please sign the petition!

This mentality outrageous in 2011. So women in bikinis on the beach may be raped by any man who wants them? Are we going back to the Middle Ages that the middle eastern countries live, that a woman raped inflamed a man to lust so it was her fault and she can be divorced or stoned to death.

If this guy wears an open shirt at the neck does that mean any woman that he inflames to lust he must service.

This guy has no business being in the public industry. He needs to move to Egypt or Turkey or Iraq.

If a man could be raped and was as often as women are the laws would be a lot tougher and remarks like this wouldn't exist. Hell yes I signed the petition. Every woman on-line needs to sign this.

I thank you for bringing it to my attention.

Don’t go to a man’s home at night unless you’re prepared to have sex with him

Are you fucking kidding me?

Omg, let's talk about the last comment in that entry where the commenter just thinks we need to exchange information with this guy. No, sorry, I don't need to exchange information with a guy who thinks women are to blame for their rapes.

I'm not even going to get into the part where they're like "no, women don't need to wear turtle necks, but they shouldn't be wearing tube tops or daisy dukes either."

Holy hell.

"Are you fucking kidding me?" are the exact words that went through my mind upon reading that. Also the "Don't trust your male friends" part......seriously? Women should trust that the men they're friends with won't RAPE THEM. Seriously, wtf.

Also, did anybody read the follow up article where he twists his own words? My favorite part was this:

To all readers of BSR: Since I constantly talk about using BSR as a tool to educate myself, you may well ask: What have I learned from this experience? A great deal. A few highlights:

— Many women (and men) send out signals that they’d like to have sex. It doesn’t follow that they’d like to be raped.

Well, that's exactly what the asshole implied in the first article!

I signed this petition earlier today. It's utterly disgusting. I'll boost it, though.

That is so disgusting... I signed it. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

You're exactly right about the "if it were a man" scenario. Though there is male rape and sexual assault, it's rarely reported - but that's because of rape culture and misogyny. Rape is thought to be a "women's problem," therefore if a man is raped or assaulted, he must have been weak and womanish. If he was a "real man," it never would have happened. And that's a whole other disgusting animal.

If rape and sexual assault was anywhere near as prevalent for men as it is for women, I really do believe that there would be less of this kind of mentality - that the victim was "asking for it."

Right? RIGHT?

Let me fix that sentence:

Don't ask a woman over to your house at night if you are unable to keep yourself from raping her.

or

Don't allow a woman into your house at night if you are a disgusting rapist.

God, it honestly blows my mind that people are STILL trotting out these tired old arguments. I will wear daisy fucking dukes and tube tops if I fucking want to - that doesn't mean that any man who passes me on the street has a right to violate my body. Why do people think this?! I'm attracted to sweaters and glasses on men. Does that mean I can attack and violate any man I see who wears those things?

And seriously, why do people still think rape is about lust? It's about power. Women get raped wearing everything from burqas to gas station uniforms - the rapist doesn't care.

UGH UGH UGH.

[identity profile] applespicy.livejournal.com 2011-06-29 04:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I know.

The worst thing is, I'm really not surprised somebody wrote this. Rape culture - it's everywhere.

[identity profile] applespicy.livejournal.com 2011-06-29 04:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Awesome. The more word that gets out about this bullshit, the better.

And seriously... who needs to LEARN that? Rape and sex are different? NO SHIT.

I love how that whole post, minus a few non-problematic comments, are now "women LIE!" and "but what about the MEN?!" Fucking ridiculous.

I wish I could say I was surprised to hear about something like this. Still, the ubiquity of this attitude doesn't make me feel any less rage. Signed!
